Ticks thrive in moist, shaded, vegetated environments where they can easily wait for a passing host and retain enough humidity to survive. Dense low shrubs, tall ground covers, and tall grass provide just that combination: protection from sun, higher humidity near the ground, leaf litter and microhabitats, and frequent movement of animals that can carry them. This kind of habitat creates the perfect conditions for ticks to quest and latch onto hosts.

In contrast, desert scrub is typically dry and hot, which is harsh for ticks. Open water doesn’t offer the vegetation or textured ground needed for ticks to hide and stay moist. Urban turf with no vegetation lacks the cover and humidity ticks need and usually has fewer hosts moving through it.
